The Artist - Indie Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that, this year, they might just receive at the Oscars as well. The 2012 winners were announced on Saturday, via Deadline, at a ceremony held at lunch in sunny Santa Monica on the beach. The big winner was, indeed, Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, which took home wins for Best Film, Director, Actor and Cinematography. But I'm actually happiest to see writer Will Reiser and 50/50 finally get an award. Read on for the complete list of Indie Spirit winners.

You'll notice an [IMDb] link next to each film. This is so you can discover great new films, because there is guaranteed to be at least one film you've never heard of in here. Read on for a complete list of nominees and winners from the 27th Independent Spirit Awards. Winners from each category are designated in BOLD.

For last year's list of nominees and winners, which included Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan taking home a total of four just like The Artist, click here. It seems to have upset pundits and moviegoers even more that The Artist has swept these awards, not only for being a French production (when this is supposed to be for American independent), but because they expect it to win lots of Oscars, but it's not that big of a surprise. That said, these are some great awards, with Michelle Williams and Shailene Woodley getting recognized, along with Pariah and of course screenwriter Will Reiser of 50/50 getting the award he truly deserves, too.

nice to see a list of noms that included  Drive, Take Shelter and 50/50, as well as Harrelson's performance in Rampart. *still* no mention of Senna, though, in another set of documentary nominations.  baffling.
