After lending their voices to the animated film The Ant Bully in 2006, acclaimed Oscar-winning actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are acting together in a live-action movie now called August: Osage County. It's a dysfunctional family drama based on Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize winning book and Tony award-winning play, and with Streep and Roberts playing mother and daughter and George Clooney and Grant Heslov producing, more Oscar nominations are sure to come. But the movie has just added some significant talent in the supporting actress category with Abigail Breslin and Juliette Lewis joining.
Letts wrote the screenplay, and John Wells (The Company You Keep) is set to direct. The story follows three daughters who return home to be with their drug-addicted mother (Streep) after their alcoholic father disappears, and all sorts of family secrets are revealed. Lewis will play another of Streep's daughters alongside Roberts while Breslin will play Roberts' daughter, a pot-smoking 14-year-old with anger issues. I'm not the biggest fan of Lewis, but hopefully putting her in the good company of such acclaimed actresses will help her step up her game. And obviously, there's no better environment for a young actress like Breslin to hone her skills with the best in the industry, so this should be a really cool opportunity to see if she can hold her own against these seasoned veterans.
