Alamo Drafthouse Next Expanding into an AMC Kansas City Theater
Our motto is simple: share the movies we love with the widest audience possible. The Alamo Drafthouse continues its aggressive nationwide expansion with a location in Kansas City, popping up as soon as this fall. The news comes from Badass Digest, announcing that the Alamo Drafthouse is taking over the former flagship AMC Mainstreet Theater in downtown Kansas City, Missouri (see Google maps). For those still too far away from any Drafthouse only viewing from home, they have also launched a new subscription service called Alliance that SlashFilm featured today. More details on the new Kansas City theater below.
The Alamo Drafthouse press release states that: "The facility is slated to open as an Alamo Drafthouse in the fall of 2012, but will continue to operate in its current configuration through the summer." The AMC Mainstreet Theater is a 6-screen cinema in the heart of the downtown Power and Light District. Drafthouse owner & CEO Tim League comments on this news: "The Mainstreet Theater is truly one of the most spectacular cinemas in the world. We are truly honored to have the opportunity to bring the Alamo brand of movie programming and food service to such a wonderful facility." The venue will feature 6 screens of new release movies, independent and repertory films as well as Alamo's unique signature programming.
The Mainstreet already had a renovation back in 2009 and got upgraded to 4K digital and Dolby 11.1 sound. "In addition to continued presentation excellence, the Alamo Drafthouse renovation will eliminate the traditional front row, ensuring every seat in the house allows for a great viewing experience. Like all Alamo Drafthouse theaters, the Alamo Mainstreet will provide food and drink service to your seat and will uphold its famously strict no-talking policy." They also add: "This new vision for the Mainstreet also extends to the theater’s spacious interior bar, which will reemerge as The Chesterfield. The Chesterfield resurrects a slice of Kansas City's past, harkening back to the jazz age days of Paris on The Plains, when Charlie Parker's saxophone blared over 12th & Vine." Sounds like the kind of place I want to spend my evenings at already.
It's great to see that Alamo is really expanding in every way, not only with a can't-beat subscription, but also a new theater in Kansas City, the home of theater chain AMC. To recap again, the Alamo Drafthouse is expanding to: Colorado, New York City and San Francisco, hopefully other areas like Los Angeles, Seattle and Pennsylvania as well.
