With Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Anthony Mackie stepping up to the plate as his sidekick Falcon, maybe it's time to get some ladies in on the sequel. In August we heard that Anna Kendrick, Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones were being eyed for a lead female role in the Marvel sequel. Now some new names have also been added with Emelia Clarke ("Game of Thrones"), Jessica Findlay Brown ("Downton Abbey"), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Alison Brie ("Community") rounding out the shortlist for a new love interest for Rogers. More below!
Poots is apparently still on the list which Deadline has revealed, but Kendrick and Jones are nowhere to be seen. The report doesn't specify what character these ladies are up for, but as we've speculated before, it's likely Sharon Carter, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who is also the niece of Peggy Carter (the love interest of Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger). It's not clear if there's a frontrunner in this field, but each of the actresses are testing for the role. Maybe it just depends on who looks best in a S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform? We know Palmer can kick ass, so she's probably my choice. But I'd love to see Brie get a role like this in the same way Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill) went from 'How I Met Your Mother" to The Avengers.
Speaking of The Avengers, Deadline also hears that Scarlett Johansson will have some sort of role as Black Widow in the Captain America sequel. Hopefully Joss Whedon overseeing Phase Two of Marvel's cinematic universe means she won't be used so clumsily as she was in Iron Man 2 (no matter how much ass she kicked or how good she looked in that body suit). Production is gearing up so hopefully we'll hear more soon.
