Arclight Cinemas

The great movie chain expansion of this decade has begun. The Alamo Drafthouse is taking on Littleton, Colorado, San Francisco and New York City, now the world famous Arclight Cinemas based right here out of Los Angeles is starring its nationwide expansion. The LA Times' Company Town reports that Arclight has officially announced an East Coast location now in development, being built as a new 16-screen multiplex in Bethesda, Maryland. Construction will begin next year at the Westfield Montgomery shopping mall with completion expected by 2014. Just in time for the next Transformers, right? But that's not all for Arclight.

Arclight, which is already very successful in Southern California with four locations currently operating, is planning to go beyond Maryland. The Times reports that this Bethesda theater is "among several theaters that ArcLight plans to open in the next two to three years at undisclosed locations in the East and Midwest as part of a modest nationwide expansion." It looks like it's finally time for Arclight to take on the States. "We've created a unique experience at ArcLight Cinemas and we want to share our love of film with movie lovers across the country," said Arclight CEO Chris Forman. "Bethesda provides us with a great opportunity to build an ArcLight community on the East Coast and redefine the way people enjoy their movies." Hooray.

If you're not familiar with the "Arclight experience", the theater chain in Southern California features very nice, very comfy, plentiful large-screen theaters that boast better projection quality, better seats (double arm rests!), reserved seating, and other film-fan perks all around. It comes at a slightly higher ticket price, but if you can afford it, the Arclight Hollywood is one of the greatest places to see movies in Los Angeles. I'm glad to see them expand outside of California, I just hope they continue to evolve their business model and improve the experience beyond just expanding. I usually go see movies at an Arclight when I can and I hope they maintain their integrity all across the country. We'll keep you updated on their expansion plans.

In Tampa we dont have antyhing like this but the Muvico in Ybor if you make sure the film is being shown in the premier is a hidden gem for Tampa film fans. Leather huge seats with double huge armrests, free popcorn, alcohol, no commercials and no kids under 13. Gotta love it.
  • Wow. We're lucky here in MD. I live about 40 minutes from an Alamo Drafthouse ¬†(in Winchester, VA) and now will be about 45 mins from an Arclight. I wish they were closer, but I won't complain, since most of the country doesn't have these types of choices for movie theaters that actually care about the movie-goer experience!

I'm not familiar with Arclight and Bethesda can be a pain to get around, but I'm willing to check it when it opens.
  • Finally! Some good movie news in my stomping¬†ground.
