Christina Ricci & Brendan Gleeson Join 'Smurfs 2' in Production Now
Sometimes, studio heads have tough decisions to make. But when the first movie in a potential franchise makes $560 million dollars worldwide at the box office, that pretty much makes the decision for them. So in the most unsurprising announcement of the day, production has begun on The Smurfs 2, the newest live-action/animation hybrid for Columbia Pictures and follow-up to the 2011 smash hit. The Smurfs director Raja Gosnell and all of the main cast members are returning for the sequel, along with some new faces. Brendan Gleeson, Christina Ricci, and JB Smoove have joined the cast as well. More below!
ComingSoon has the press release, which unveils the new cast members. Gleeson will play Neil Patrick Harris' stepfather, while Ricci and Smoove will lend their voices to two mischievous Smurf-like creatures named Vexy and Hackus. This movie is written by an astounding five writers, including J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Karey Kirkpatrick and Jay Scherick & David Ronn. What is this, the Cowboys & Aliens of kids' films? (That movie also had a ton of writers, for those who don't get that joke.) Anyway, you can expect a lot of zaniness and broad stereotypes of foreign cultures as the Smurfs head to Europe this time out. This movie will wrap up the summer movie season next year, hitting theaters on July 31st, 2013.
