Helen Mirren and Colin Firth

On Halloween this year, news surfaced that Fox Searchlight had greenlit a sequel to their surprisingly successful adaptation of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (based on Deborah Maggoch's novel These Foolish Things) from Shakespeare in Love director John Madden. All appropriate cast members are returning from the original (watch the film to find out what that means), and now Showbiz 411 (via The Film Stage) has word that Helen Mirren and Colin Firth are in talks to join Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel and Bill Nighy for the sequel. Also, it seems Madden will return with writer Ol Parker for the sequel.

There was some discussion about moving our characters from India to a new location, but it sounds like the story will stay there and continue following Dench's exploits in the country. In addition to Mirren and Firth joining, Madden and Parker are also looking for an American actress to join this time. Meryl Streep seems like too obvious of a choice, but it would be fun to see her with the rest of that crew. Maybe Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton or Sigourney Weaver? Those seem like solid additions as well, but we're just throwing names around. Stay tuned as this sequel develops.

i enjoyed the first one - i'm just not sure how well a sequel would turn out. part of the charm of the first one was the people discovering the nuances of india.....i'm hoping they end up with a good script.

as long as they don't run it into the ground as the do so often when it comes to sequels where they build one sequel on after another and original intent is lost in the shuffle
