Dan Aykroyd To Play Liberace's Manager in Soderbergh's HBO Biopic
I was somewhat shocked to realize that Dan Aykroyd hasn't appeared in a movie since 2008. He's been incessantly pimping a Ghostbusters sequel that will probably never happen for years, so it feels like he never left. But the former "SNL" star will return to the spotlight soon as he just wrapped The Campaign with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Now Variety reports that Aykroyd will appear in another buzzed-about film, Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra. He'll play the singer's (Michael Douglas) long-time manager, who doesn't approve of his gay relationship with lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon).
Behind the Candelabra was once set up at Warner Bros., but despite Soderbergh's track record doing the Ocean's movies for the studio, this project couldn't get off the ground at the WB. Now HBO Films is taking over, and the movie will debut on the premium channel before getting a theatrical release outside of North America. This movie has been in the works for a years, delayed even further by Michael Douglas' battle with cancer (from which he's now recovered, thankfully). Filming finally gets underway this summer, working from Richard LaGravenese's script which was based on Thorson's memoir. I admittedly don't know much about Liberace, but with talent like Soderbergh behind the camera and vets like Douglas, Damon, and Aykroyd in front of it, I'm sure we're in for a solid biopic. Thoughts?
