Drew Pearce Giving a Rewrite to Legendary's New Take On 'Godzilla'

We just found out that Marvel's Iron Man 3 is getting a trailer on October 23rd (hopefully with some of the Comic-Con footage we saw included), and now word comes from Variety that IM3 co-writer Drew Pearce has been hired to take a pass at the script for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's giant monster movie Godzilla for Monsters director Gareth Edwards. The Expendables co-writer David Callaham, Batman Begins co-writer David S. Goyer, and The Seventh Son scribe Max Borenstein have all tried their hand so far, but thankfully that doesn't mean there's any trouble brewing behind the scenes. More below!

Legendary is apparently pleased with the story elements in place for Godzilla so far, so Pearce is basically being brought in to rewrite characters to be older so the studio can offer parts to actors in a certain age range. Frankly, I'm glad they're staying away from casting young for this project, hopefully some veteran actors can actually bring an air of legitimacy and some real stakes to the proceedings, even when there's a giant monster smashing things around. Edwards told us at Comic-Con that he wanted to make this world feel absolutely real, and casting the correct actors is going to play a big part in building that world.

Most of the plot of this incarnation of Godzilla is still being kept under wraps, but we know that it has a May 16th, 2014 release date and should be hitting the big screen in 3D as well, and that kind of immersive experience might actually suit this project pretty well thematically instead of just being a cash grab power play by a studio. This will also be an opportunity for us to see if Pearce can craft some quality character moments, since he really only has Iron Man 3 and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3 to his name so far, and obviously we haven't seen either of those yet. With Godzilla still a solid year and a half away, we'll be watching closely to see how this one shapes up.

I like the godzilla movie with Broderick. But this'll be an interesting new take on it. Even if the movie is bad, I'll still go see it (big fan of sci fi monster movies).

OMG FINALLY AN UPDATE ON THE GODZILLA PROJECT! i been waiting for an update since the first article of it back in 2011, this makes me smile! idc if the movie is bad, i been watching godzilla since i was 4

hopefully toho will help with the movie the one that came out with brodwick was an insult to the fans of godzilla maybe if it works universal and toho can come together and remake kingkong vs godzilla. with toho useing the finalewars godzilla suit and universal developing kong. this would be goodfor a joint u.s. japaness movie venture
