Emma Watson to Lead Sofia Coppola's Next Project 'The Bling Ring'
With Hogwarts behind her and the Harry Potter franchise at an end (until it's likely remade in 10 years), Emma Watson is making swift moves to keep her career going strong. The British actress is already slated to star in Guillermo del Toro's take on Beauty and the Beast, and now she's slated to lead another project. Variety has word that Watson will lead The Bling Ring, the next film from Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation). Coppola also wrote the true story which follows a group of teenagers who commit a string of celebrity burglaries, and she'll also produce with her brother, filmmaker Roman Coppola.
Here's a more detailed synopsis from the press release: "The Bling Ring shows a group of teenagers obsessed with fashion and fame who burglarized the homes of celebrities in Los Angeles. Tracking their targets’ whereabouts online, the teens would break-in and steal designer clothes and possessions. Reflecting on the naiveté of youth, amplified by today’s culture of celebrity and luxury brand obsession, the members of the Bling Ring introduce us to temptations that nearly any teenager would find hard to resist. What starts out as youthful fun spins out of control and reveals a sobering view of our modern culture.
Coppola didn't land very strongly with Somewhere, but considering her track record before that, I'm very much looking forward to any project from her. She does seem to have a penchant for giving young leading ladies the chance to spread their wings. Kirsten Dunst was great in The Virgin Suicides and Scarlett Johansson exploded after Lost in Translation and even Elle Fanning (the younger sister of Dakota Fanning) got plenty of acclaim for her turn in Somewhere. Watson is just part of an ensemble, so there's likely some other great talent coming along with her. Stay tuned.
