F. Gary Gray

The humorously-named F. Gary Gray is reuniting with Ice Cube for Straight Outta Compton, a biopic that Deadline says will chronicle the rise of the NWA, the infamous rap group widely recognized as pioneers for gangsta rap. Gray has directed videos for Ice Cube before, and for those who just know Cube from his appearances in family-friendly movies, he was one of the founding members of rap group NWA back in the mid-1980s. NWA was the jumping-off point for rappers like Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, and actually sparked a cultural revolution in Southern California that spread across the United States like wildfire. More below!

Ice Cube himself actually directed a documentary for ESPN Films that touched on the influence of the NWA on local culture called Straight Outta L.A., but this time around, Cube will just be credited as a producer and he'll let Gray do the directing. This also takes Gray out of the running for the director's chair on Captain America 2, a coveted job for which he was in the running just the other day. George Nolfi and the Russo Brothers are still in talks for that position, so keep checking back for more as these projects develop.

So promising, but I foresee casting problems and music rights issues that should keep this movie on the shelf for a few years.

  • I.... am....down. ¬†Efil4zaggin. and who would be the cast I wonder?
  • Big Boss
I know for sure Gary's gonna get Eric's son to play Easy. That should be in the contract clause. lol
  • Lebowski
Dr. Dre will produce the soundtrack and deliver it bang on time, six years after the release of the film.
