Hugh Jackman Talks 'Wolverine' Timeline & Mentions X-Men Cameo

Though it would have undoubtedly been awesome if Darren Aronofsky had stayed on to direct The Wolverine, we're still excited about James Mangold stepping in and teaming with star Hugh Jackman to tell the Wolverine story that's been begging to be seen on the big screen since the first X-Men movie hit theaters more than a decade ago. The duo have already mentioned that The Wolverine will take place after all of the other films we've seen in the X-Men saga, but in a new interview with Parade (via Bleeding Cool), Jackman confirms that and says we'll also see another X-Men member in the movie. But who? Read on!
Here's the exact quote Jackman gave to Parade when asked about The Wolverine:
You want to get me into trouble, don’t you? [laughs] Okay, the movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him. And there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it.
The mention of a cameo in The Wolverine is interesting, especially considering what Bryan Singer is doing by bringing together the veterans (Jackman included) and the cast from First Class into his upcoming sequel Days of Future Past. This will obviously be a separate entity, but with Wolverine at "his lowest," what are the odds we'll see the return of Famke Janssen's Jean Grey character, either resurrected again as the Phoenix or in flashback form to haunt Logan following the tough choice he made at the end of X3?
That's only speculation right now, and Mangold has already mentioned that Jean is gone at this point on the timeline, but a cameo from her makes sense: Jean may be the only person capable of "really hurt[ing]" Logan since he's virtually indestructible and we already know that he'll be more emotionally vulnerable in this movie. Regardless of what other familiar face shows up in The Wolverine, we're excited to see what Mangold, writer Christopher McQuarrie, and of course Jackman, have to offer on July 26th, 2013.
