IFC Films Lands Mike Birbiglia's Sundance Hit 'Sleepwalk with Me'
The film made quite a splash at Sundance in January (read my glowing review here) and now, Sleepwalk with Me, the directorial debut of comedian Mike Birbiglia has finally locked down a distributor in the United States. Risky Biz has word that IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to distribute the film, as well as other unnamed territories as well. The film is based on Birbiglia's one man stand-up show of the same name which he adapted into a feature screenplay with Ira Glass, host of Chicago Public Media’s public radio show This American Life, on which Birbiglia frequently contributes his quirky comedic talents.
The film follows a fictional version of Birbiglia as a struggling stand-up comedian coming to terms with his dangerous sleepwalking habits, and his hesitancy to commit to a relationship with his girlfriend played by Lauren Ambrose. In real life, Birbiglia's sleepwalking condition was a serious issue as it actually resulted in him jumping out of a second story hotel window in Washington, something that audiences will see play out in the film. Fans of Birbiglia and those who aren't familiar with his work will enjoy this film just the same as it draws from his familiar stand-up act, but not in an inside joke manner. Honestly, having loved the film myself with so many other colleagues at Sundance, I can't wait for you to see it.
