Though it sounded like Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Devil's Double) was ready to take on Motor City with director Albert Hughes, scheduling conflicts forced the actor to drop out and Warner Bros. and Dark Castle have been looking for a new face to lead the film. Now Variety reports they have one with Jake Gyllenhaal in negotiations to take the vacated role of a small-time hood who is framed and sent to prison, only to exact revenge years later to get back the woman he loves, (Amber Heard of Drive Angry). Gary Oldman will play the kingpin-type criminal who has the woman under his grasp.
As we've pointed out before, the script is well known around Hollywood for containing only one line of dialogue, but it's not clear if that staple trait has made it this far into development on the film. Gyllenhaal has been all about action lately with Source Code and End of Watch being his most recent projects, and it sounds like this film will have him kicking some asses as well. It's an interesting pairing to have Gyllenhaal facing off with Gary Oldman and the two each bring something unique to the table. Heard, meanwhile, has mostly looked pretty, but has the potential to turn in a really great performance. Considering Hughes took this on after Akira failed to get off the ground before, hopefully this is a worthwhile substitute project.
