Mirror Mirror star Lilly Collins has been set to star in an adaptation of the Mortal Instruments series for nearly two years, and it looks like the project is finally picking up some steam. It acquired a director in The Karate Kid remake helmer Harold Zwart, picked up actors Kevin Durand and Robert Maillet, and has now added some more heavy-hitters to the cast. ScreenGems has announced 300 and "Game of Thrones" star Lena Headey and "Mad Men" and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows actor Jared Harris have joined the first film which is now officially titled The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Read on!
Based on the first book in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series, City of Bones follows New York City teenager Clary Fray, who discovers she's a descendant of half-angel warriors called Shadowhunters. When her mother disappears, she's taken down into a bizarre alternate New York called Downworld where she has to battle demons, werewolves, warlocks, vampires, and more alongside her new family of soldiers. Headey will play the missing mother, Harris will play a cursed teacher known as Hodge Starkweather, and little-known actor Godfrey Gao has also joined up as a hard-partying warlock named Magnus Bane.
Headey and Harris always bring a certain level of gravitas to their work, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones sounds like it needs something to ground it a bit with all of the supernatural elements going on. Still, it sounds like it has potential, and we only have about a year to wait since they're looking to hit an August 23rd, 2013 release date. Could it rival the recent popularity of The Hunger Games series, or will this fall to the wind like many other young adult adaptations that failed to find an audience in their attempt to catch the Harry Potter fanbase? Stay tuned.
