Kickstart This: Shocking Black Comedy 'Electric' Starring Sam Claflin

Welcome back to another edition of Kickstart This, FirstShowing's weekly column dedicated to spreading the word about indie projects that need your help to become a reality. This week, we're featuring a unique black comedy called Electric, from two New Zealand-born filmmakers looking to make their mark. This tale of "loneliness, rebirth, and electrocution" has enlisted Sam Claflin, rising star of On Stranger Tides, Snow White and the Huntsman and the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire, so hopefully he'll get this some extra attention. Take a look, sound off, and don't forget to toss the filmmakers a few bucks if you can.
The film tells the story of a man who is about to give up on the world when he's effectively shocked back to life. It invigorates his previously boring existence, and be begins sharing this newfound electricity with everyone he comes in contact with. With such a strange concept, there are plenty of opportunities to craft metaphorical layers of meaning here, exploring humanity's need for electronics and technology through the story of one man's reliance on shocks to get him through his everyday habits. And though things may seem dour with the story at first, I'm guessing we're in for some shocking results once things get electrified and the action really gets underway.
There's some pretty impressive pop up visuals highlighted in the pitch video, in which the directors use detailed computer generated effects to pitch us their crazy story. There's also some dumb and really random humor involved, which I happen to think is pretty funny and shows that while these guys are definitely serious about getting this project off the ground, they still have what it takes to make a good comedy. But animation and green screen sequences aren't always cheap, so they're looking to raise some money to finally get underway on this ambitious project. Check out their pitch video below and judge for yourself:
For more information on Electric, or to help fund the project, visit its Kickstarter page. Co-directors Owain Pennington and Owen Watts are looking to raise about $15,000 by Wednesday, January 2nd, and they need your help to bring this dark comedy to life. It's now the holiday season, so if you're feeling generous, this is a good cause. If you're all out of cash, I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you could spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or anywhere else you can.
