Lionsgate to Adapt Short Horror Film 'Lovely Monster' into Feature
Looks like Italian director Francesco Calabrese is the latest beneficiary of the Hollywood trend of tracking down feature filmmakers from their YouTube short films. Variety reports that Lionsgate, a studio which has a long history with distributing horror, is in negotiations for a feature length adaptation of Calabrese's short film Lovely Monster. It follows a young girl who has something mysterious growing inside her, and similar to District 9's documentary style, it interviews people she's interacted with while building up to a big reveal. Watch the original short and get some more information below. Check it out!
Here's Francesco Calabrese's original short film Lovely Monster:
Calabrese, who wrote and directed the short, is being lined up to make his feature directorial debut on this project for Lionsgate, and the enigmatic John Scott 3 will write the feature length script. Scott 3 is a particularly inspired choice as a collaborator, considering he wrote the Black List favorite Maggie, a zombie story with a tone similar to Lovely Monsters that has Chloe Moretz and Paddy Considine attached as to star.
Like many others we've seen fall by the wayside, this could very well end up falling apart after a studio gets hot on a YouTube property and then cools on the idea once the feature length script rolls in and they realize it doesn't quite work as well in that form. But with a talented writer like Scott 3 and someone like Cabrese, who obviously had a lot more thought out regarding this idea than what made it into his short, maybe it'll squeeze through the pipeline and into theaters before long.
