Almost a year ago, word came out that We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay was looking to direct a science fiction take on Herman Melville's classic story of Moby Dick, but back then she was still in the design and planning stages of preproduction, talking about creating "a whole new world, and a new alien" for the screen. Now, 12 months later, THR reports that the title of the film will be Mobius, and that alien will be at the center of the story because it will indeed retell the tale of Captain Ahab and the giant whale in space, except the whale will now be replaced by this enigmatic new alien creation. More below!
Ramsay is co-writing the Mobius screenplay with her Kevin co-writer Rory Kinnear, and Scott Steindorff and his fledgling Scott Pictures are financing and producing. The film is being described as a "psychological action thriller" and again taps into the theme of a deranged captain fueled by rage who takes his crew on a death mission to exact his revenge against a creature that has done him wrong. Last year, Ramsay called this project, "A very psychological piece, mainly taking place in the ship, a bit like 'Das Boot,' so it's quite claustrophobic." We know Ramsay can execute the psychological aspects of the story based on her work on Kevin, but I'm interested to see if she can handle the action elements as well.
We'll find out soon enough, because she has Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender starring a western called Jane Got A Gun that shoots in January, and presumably Mobius will get underway once that project is finished. Now the only thing they need to worry about is locking down Moby to handle the soundtrack for this sci-fi thriller, and they'll have a completely Moby-centric production.
