Yesterday one of the big stories that had fans breathing a sigh of relief and throwing their fists of triumph in the air was the official news that production was beginning on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For from Robert Rodiriguez and Frank Miller. Casting is slated to begin next week with most of the original cast said to return, but when Deadline revealed the press release, they also made an off-handed remark about some casting for Rodriguez's other sequel in development Machete Kills. In addition to Danny Trejo returning in the title role, apparently Michelle Williams and Mel Gibson are wanted for a couple unknown roles.
They don't mention anything other than that Rodriguez is eyeing both the actors for a couple of roles. Gibson would be a fun addition to the genre film, but considering his public profile lately (he's in another spat with a collaborator about racists remarks) I doubt he'd be able to play a role like De Niro's from the first film without more than a little controversy. Of course, Lindsay Lohan booked a gig in the first one amidst all her scandals, and it would likely only help the press for the movie anyway.
All we know about the sequel so far is it will follow Machete beingrecruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. The bad-ass Mexican must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy. Gibson would be a great villain in this scenario, but I'm not sure if Williams is into roles in silly films like this. Stay tuned for more.
