Morgan Freeman Heading to the Future with Tom Cruise in 'Oblivion'
His booming voice served as the narration to space and the heavens themselves in the Science Channel series "Through the Wormhole," but now Morgan Freeman will be headed into the future. Deadline has word that the veteran actor has landed a critical role in Oblivion, the big budget sci-fi film from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski with Tom Cruise starring. The film follows the last man (Cruise) on a post-apocalyptic and nearly uninhabitable Earth, who stays behind to repair ships that hunt down and blast a virulent alien species. However, at this time it's not clear what role Freeman has landed in the sci-fi story.
Just last month we heard that Olga Kurylenko was joining the project after Jessica Chastain had to step away due to scheduling issues. Andrea Riseborough also stars in the film, but much like Freeman, we're not sure how she ties into the story yet either. Right now Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt is polishing the script after a recent draft was written by William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek. It sounds like the project is coming together rather smoothly, so let's hope that Universal doesn't decide to pull the plug on this project like so many other recent failed films that went into turnaround.
