After Earth

"Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans." This week is going to be chock full of trailers for huge releases in 2013, and it looks like the first one out of the gate is M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi action adventure After Earth starring Will Smith and his rising star son Jaden Smith. This is an international trailer, and the domestic trailer is supposed to be coming later today (it's exactly the same and embedded below), but this still looks pretty interesting. The story finds a father and son from another planet crash landed on a quarantined Earth 1,000 years after humanity was forced to desert it. Now the wildlife has evolved and run wild, making it very dangerous. Is Jaden Smith actually the real star of this film? Watch it!

Here's the first official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth, originally via Yahoo:

1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime is mankind’s new home. General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the planet to recover their rescue beacon. M. Night Shyamalan directs After Earth wrote it with Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and it hits theaters on June 7th, 2013.

What's with the accent? Are they partially deaf?
    • http://www.firstshowing.net/ Ethan Anderton
It seems like it's probably an evolved English sort of dialect.
      • Manuel
It's kinda the way the black people will speak in the future?
        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Sheppard/100001398333140 Robert Sheppard
are you being serious? anyways yea it sounds like it's just a new accent, i suspect it would still be changing over time.
    • Richie G
Sounds like a Kentucky accent or something. I dunno
    • http://www.facebook.com/brendo.mckendo Brendan Stenson
      sounds fine to me
  • Will
Pandora on Earth, seems to me.
  • earthlingdave
Looks very cool. Worried about M. Night, as always, but looks cool...
    • Richie G
Could this be my first M. Night movie since The Village? Apprehensive
  • Drock
I'm surprised he didn't save that they were on Earth all along as a twist ending.
  • grimjob
    Looks good, definitely interested.
  • Steven
Planet of the Apes/Avatar - but still looks stunning :)
  • Billbob
looks cool and original. can't wait!
  • Tester
If there are no humans on this version of Earth, then how could the wildlife "evolve to kill humans" ? As far as the trailer, it looks kinda cool..
    • Manuel
They evolved to kill humans and they exint us already.
    • http://www.facebook.com/eru88 Eru'Eru Narvaez
that's why humans left earth 1,000 years before that.
    • noname
Also ,real life evolution does not work like that.
    • Tester
me doofus, thx guys, I stand corrected
  • HarryFiddleSticks
This is Earth? But now we already know the twist!
    • Manuel
They are ghosts. It's not Earth. It's now, but they are a reflect of the future. They are zombies. It's a prequel.
      • Jericho
its the midnight screening on board the starship enterprise, tickets are ten dollars per person. no federation discount allowed....

There is no economy based on money in Star Trek...oh...you mean the Fake Trek of J.J.Abrams...
          • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
By "Fake Trek" you must mean "New Trek which can actually result in a hit film that critics like"
          • hater
No,no, I mean fake trek..I did not say it is bad altogether just that it's fake...
          • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
            Well, you are incorrect.
      • Richie G
"It's now, but they are a reflect of the future"... I have no idea what that means, but knowing M. Night Shamalamadingdong, that's probably what it is. Seriously though, what is it? Time travel?
    • Steven
It's in the official plot summary at Coming Soon that father and son crash land on Earth...
      • HarryFiddleSticks
It's called a joke. Try it sometime
        • Andrea Moss
          IT'S A CRAP!
        • Steven
Surprised you could read. The twist is your covering up the fact you missed the point of the film.
  • http://www.facebook.com/david.balderdash David Balderdash
The twist is it's not Earth. Or is it? It is/isn't.
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7YGEVuJ4mM Carpola
Liking it. Did I see a girl in there too? And some enemy spaceships?
  • The Truth
Jaden Smith looking more handsome than ever. He will be a major star soon.
    • Nielsen700
      Pedobear...

Jaden Smith was grown in a vat, and groomed to take over the human race aka the Antichrist, aka author of all sin, aka the devourer, and last but not least: chief of the demons. Brace yourselves for a new age of movie garbage.
      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7YGEVuJ4mM Carpola
There is no devil, he was invented by 6th century Christians, but as the devil was an invention of man, so was God. I doubt the son of one of the wettest rappers ever could be the Devil anyway. Boom Shake Shake the Room? Biblically bad, but not evil.
        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Philip-Cinquegrano/100000932639147 Christopher Philip Cinquegrano
Is it just me or is Sir William Smith trying to channel Vin Diesels low toned voice?

Is the twist this is somehow connected to 'Avatar'?
    • beevis
now that would be interesting! i wasn't wild about avatar, but to have a cross tie-in between 2 different films .......that just sounds cool.
      • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
Avatar was fantastic...this doesn't look anywhere near as good.
        • beevis
sorry chris, while i thought avatar looked good - for me, it was a lousy film - i watched as a rental and had to watch it in multiple sittings - i was so uninterested. that's just me though. and you're right about this will smith film - it looks awful. my point above was only that a cross tie-in between 2 different films would be very interesting......even if it's 2 films i don't like - i'd still like to see how they do it.
          • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
Fair enough...Avatar does seem to have a bit of a polarizing effect. I found it to be a bit a masterpiece in visual storytelling, to be honest. Big fan of a lot of the allegory and environmental/social subtext as well. Cross-overs and tie-ins are fun...but I don't like them for no good reason...Avatar and After Earth aren't owned/produced by the same studio...so no crossover could really happen. Plus there is no need.
          • wine
You call it subtext I say there was nothing sub about it .It was right in your face.
          • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
Well...it seems like there is no win for losing, half the people say it's shallow and is 'all visuals' nothing more' and then half the people say that there was TOO much commentary and allegory, too many messages and themes. There is a lot to miss or pick up on, depending on your own state of mind and intelligence. If you plan to be pissed about any messages, that is all you will see, if you damn the movie as hollow and nothing but spectacle, you aren't going to notice anything else. There is a reason that film was such a global success, because it was able to get a universal response across cultures and languages. The reaction speaks for itself.
  • Nielsen700
    Will Smith sounds weird.
  • buzzfunk
Seems to be like the Trailer gave away the movies big twist? Earth? This guy made one of my fav movies of all time. Unbreakable. Yet, the last 5 movies were so so so so bad. I mean, so SO bad, that I cannot see why anyone would give this guy money?? Hollywoods math is all screwed up, IMO.
    • Steven
It being Earth isn't the twist, that's mentioned in the plot summary.
    • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
The title of the movie is freaking 'After Earth'...I don't think it being Earth is any sort of 'twist'...that speech where he says 'It's earth' likely comes about 1/3rd of the way through the movie, TOPS.
  • ding dong
Where is the signature over the top "Aww hell no" from Mr. Will Smith ?
  • redskulllives
    Nice :)
  • Maverick
Interested but not impressed. I get the feeling that the trailer only covers the early portion of the movie and there is more to it that just survival. As long as the twist is not Will being a ghost or this being Earth a billion years before our earth, I'll be fine with it.
  • Daniel
Twist: Will Smith is dead the whole time.
    • THE WOLF
i thought the same while he was narrating.
  • rocky728
Wow I'm impressed. I think it looks great.
  • ricky
I couldn't even make it through the trailer. Very tired, no originality at all.
  • AJ
It looks good actually. I was more excited for oblivion but was kinda let down with the trailer, but this one surprised me quite positively.
    • noname
I think it's gonna be the other way round with the actual movies, meaning Oblivion will be a much better movie than After Earth. Why ?Because I doubt Shymalwhatshisname won't be able to resist putting another idiotic twist at the end.Because it has to have a twist. It's a thing. Also ,Tom Cruise is a better actor than Smiths. And there is Morgan Freeman as well.
      • AJ
You might be right. If the trailer is good, doesnt mean the movie will be too. I was just expressing my curent opinion based on what we have seen till now.
  • DAVIDPD
K-k-kool!!! Hopefully the film will be as good as the trailer.
  • http://djkento.com/ Kento
Won't see it. CGI looks horrible.
    • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
It doesn't come out for another 6 months. I'm sure the CGI won't improve by miles, but I doubt these are necessarily 100% finished shots.
  • Will
Confusing title. Rather 'After Humans', since the biosphere seems more alive than ever, not to speak of Earth itself.
    • noname
Maybe it means humans after Earth, you know the future of humans after leaving Earth. It's a clumsy title.
  • http://www.facebook.com/TheChosenPessimist Jon Odishaw
The last airbender was the worst movie I've get seen but i like the premise here and Will Smith has enough talent to save any movie.
    • OfficialJab
That's what I'm banking on. Though he has a history of somehow making good actors temporarily awful - see: The Happening.
  • Alex
Looks... generic. I dunno. Not excited over this movie. M. Night destroys everything he touches.
  • ik
Interesting how so many comments left assume that just because it's a Shyamlan film there will automatically be some huge twist. Sure, it's possible, but you know what assumptions do...
  • Lagoya
It's Shamalymmmalyalayan, so it will be crap... No matter how good the trailer looks.
    • JBrotsis
I'll give it to you that most of his recent work has been terrible...but not all of it. The sixth sense and signs was decent if not good.
      • noname
The sixth sense was very good.Signs was just a load of crap.Imo.
        • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
          Signs was fantastic.
          • vd
You are incorrect. It was average at best. The decline of Mr.Shyalamamanaa has already started to show in that movie.
          • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
Maybe if you are really against themes of faith in film...then sure, I can see how you'd be put off by a film like that. But you cannot watch the climactic scene in the living room and tell me that it isn't perfectly executed in every way. Great payoff to a great film. The Village is when he started to lose it, when he wanted to make a 'non-genre genre film'...had he played that more openly as a straight drama it would have worked better.
        • David Banner
They are not aliens. They are demons. Now it all makes sense. Read up on demons, then go watch it again.
      • Cody W
It saddens me when people overlook Unbreakable, if you dont think that movie was a complete original masterpiece then watch it again.
        • TK
Unbreakable is one of my favorite movies, and to be honest, it's his best. Because of that I have hope that this movie could be a return to form.
  • Lagoya
The twist is that the baboons are semi intelligent, and will help them.
  • yougohoe
that ruined the movie........putting his worthless ass untalented kid in the movie
    • JBrotsis
Couldn't agree more! Jayden is a horrible actor.
  • OfficialJab
Cypher Raige? Who wrote this, a twelve-year old?
  • l.21
so conflicted. Shamalama has such a terrible track record, but dang it, that looks good!
  • http://www.facebook.com/CoryLeeLind Cory Lind
How does Shyamalan keep getting work?
  • Mufasa
The twist? *ominous music* There is no twist.
  • Ceazar_s
You guys are freaking hilarious...as expected the comments poke at Shyamalan. I'll still see this, just not in theaters. "Twist" ahaahahaaa
    • Dominic A
I would also bet than "shamalamadingdong" could care less about these haters . Because after all they must've PAID their money to see the films , to "know" how bad they were . he's all good , and still getting work from studios, so " twist " his name all you want .....
  • DotaD
This is just one big movie made at attempting to blow up will smith's kid into movie stardom. Please stop.
    • beevis
i kept LMAO at the over-acted looks smith and son kept giving throughout the trailer........i couldn't take it seriously.
    • noname
Daddy's gotta take care of his kid. That's what good father does.
  • JBrotsis
I'm hoping the animals are really evolved in this movie. Discovery did an insert way back called "the future is wild" with some pretty bizarre animals evolved. From the trailer you can see typical looking baboons and bongo and a cat that looks like a saber tooth (evolved to look like a prehistoric animal, what?). So I hope some of the other animals they show look way more evolved. Like a crocodile that walks upright like an ape would be sick.
    • beevis
      thanks, mr. science! :)
      • JBrotsis
        :)
    • David Banner
As a physician and scientist, I hope this could be a part of this future earth Shyamalan would explore.
    • Dominic A
"croc walking upright ..." somebody would say he's ripping off Alien and Ridley ....
  • Armeetapus16
argh, gosh damnit, this looks really cool, but the stigma with Shyamalan's name still resonates strongly. At the same time though, it's got Will Smith and that dude is beyond credible. I'll give a chance
  • drafunt
It's "Lets do the Twist" time with M.Night!!! I like Will Simth...will watch for that reason....

    Looks terrible.
  • ff
WHo wrote this crappy dialogue? Oh yeah, shamalamadingdong....
  • Kyle.W.McDougal
A lot of jaded Movie fans here. Or maybe its just a trend now to bash movies... making yourself feel somehow superior. Seriously. Its one trailer. Its Will Smith. And his son is a decent actor in his own right. Give it a chance. Looks to be a good pop-corn blockbuster. Its not meant to be deep. Its a CGI fireworks display.
  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.groves.507 Chris Groves
Looks okay, but to me, this doesn't feel like it's going to end up being a Will Smith movie with Jaden Smith in it. It seems like it is going to turn out to be a Jaden Smith movie with Will Smith in it to boost the film's value.
  • castingcouch
Might be interesting with different actors and director. Otherwise, nyet.
  • http://www.facebook.com/muttmayhem Matthew South
anyone watching this trailer should have noticed the signs of intelligent life. Maybe another species colonized the planet after humans evacuated? Or, another species evolved after humans left?
    • hater
In just 1000 years? What ,some kind of super hyper evolution? If it worked that way in real life we'd be gods by now and we are as far as we know the fastest evolving thing on the planet so far in terms of intelligence. And one would not think that when looking around at all the stupidity in human society.
      • http://www.facebook.com/muttmayhem Matthew South
Evolution is ongoing, and 1000 years is actually a long time for a species to evolve. While we have not changed much in our physical appearance over the course of 1000 years, we have evolved greatly in other ways. We, as an over all species are smarter, living longer, and have evolved past needing things like wisdom teeth, finger and toe nails, excess body hair, an appendix, and gall bladders. Yes, rapid evolution is possible, but to point out something that should be obvious, this is a FICTIONAL movie, therefore, anything is possible, and I feel that this movie will reveal an intelligent species inhabiting the Earth after humans leave it behind.

    Rising star Jaden Smith? Moron.
  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Jones/100000163260052 Eric Jones
Looks like Prehistoric Earth not After Earth. There's you M Night Asshole twist.
  • Ronald Barker
LOL the negativity towards Will Smith is hilarious on here. Must be a bunch of super dorks or something. The guy has made numerous blockbusters and very good films and is one of the most liked celebrities in the world, fact. The consistency in his box office numbers show this. People like watching him and I do not blame them. He is a very talented individual. Yes he can overact at times but not many people can pretty much hold down a whole movie 90 minutes or more (I am legend) alone off their natural presence. He made one of the greatest sitcoms...some amazing movies and even some good music in his younger days...so keep the hate up while he keeps winning. As for the trailer, it actually looks great. The fact that they told us that it is Earth straight away may mean that they are trying to get away from expecting some sort of cliched twist at the end at it may just be a dramatic finish rather. The trailer looks impressive. Any Will Smith movie is pretty much worth watching and after men in black 3 turned out to be better than expected...this I am looking forward to. Even though it does seem like a film more based towards Jaden smith rather than Will. We'll see how good a teen actor he is I guess.
  • TheRagingCajun
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING. And what kind of a stupid name is Cypher Raige??? WTF is Smith thinking? And I am sick of seing is old tired, serious looking face. Dude needs to find himself, seriously. He ain't the same. Renewal with Alfonso Ribeiro, James Avery, Karen Parsons, Tatyana M. Ali, and Janet Hubert-Whitten for The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, season 8.
  • Cupcakes
This wont make any money. This looks like a terrible story.
  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000784195062 Ian Pullens
If M.Night was smart, the twist would be, there is no twist! The whole time we could be expecting an plot turn typical of Shyamalan, but then turns out, what's real is real and it's just an epic story... if only he was that smart...
  • mograph
I'll bet it's all a VR training exercise. Or Jaden is really a young Will, and old Will has gone back in time to right a wrong. A 13-second-wrong, maybe. Yeah, that's it!
