Early last year, we were pretty damn excited about District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's new sci-fi film Elysium. However, plot details were scarce, spy photos were perplexing, and we've yet to see any official first look photos that give us a better idea of the story. but with the film slated to hit theaters in March next year, it's time to start the hype machine again. The first step is for the studio to get some test screenings underway, and that's where our first official plot synopsis comes to light complete with character names for stars Jodie Foster and Matt Damon, and it sounds like another great sci-fi flick from Neill Blomkamp.
Here's the official synopsis from a preview screening ticket via Collider:
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Sounds like the kind of socio-political commentary under the guise of a sci-fi film that we'd expect from the director of District 9, but that's a good thing. It definitely takes place in the distant future, and at least we know what Elysium means now too. The question is what kind of mission does Damon have to undertake, and how will it effect these two populations? The film hits theaters on March 1st, 2013 and hopefully we'll see a better look or some kind of teaser soon.
