Greetings from Tim Buckley

It's been over a year since we heard about Greetings from Tim Buckley, a film from Daniel Algrant (director of People I Know and some "Sex and the City"), that would follow the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s breakthrough 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert at St. Ann’s Church. However, the film played at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival last week, and a trailer to build buzz for the film has ended up online. Penn Badgley sings his heart out as the younger Buckley, and Imogen Poots looks to put in a solid performance, but the trailer feels a little cliche and familiar. Watch?

Here's the first trailer for Daniel Algrant's Greetings from Tim Buckley via The Film Stage:

Greetings from Tim Buckley tells the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s (Penn Badgley) 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman (Imogen Poots) working at the concert, the younger Buckley comes to understand the father who abandoned him. The musician's cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs results in a stunning performance which launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time. Daniel Algrant (People I Know) directed the film which played at TIFF 2012 but doesn't have a US release date yet. Well?

Jeff Buckley is my boy, my hero.. so it's a little hard for me to get excited for a film like this that feels like a made for TV show. Penn does indeed have the singing chops though.

Also, this film was directed by Daniel Algrant. Jake Scott is directing a second film about Jeff's life called Mystery White Boy, which stars Reeve Carney in the title role. Mary Guibert, Jeff's mother and company manager, is behind that project and is out to make the best possible film about her son's life. I'm sure it will be a more exciting picture.

Yeah, sorry, I looked at the wrong article from our past stories for reference. Sorry for the confusion.

Inspite of the trailer looking and feeling a bit cliche and familiar which I believe is just a tendency in marketing the movie to its "supposed audience" this looks great.I don't know much about Jeff Buckley or his father but I love every bit of his music I heard . Also ,I am a little biased in favour of Imogen Poots 🙂 .Penn Badgley playing Jeff looks like a great choice too. Can't wait to see it.

Also, this is directed by Daniel Algrant. Jake Scott is directing a different film about the life of Jeff Buckley called Mystery White Boy, with Reeve Carney in the title role. I believe that one will be a much better film given the fact that Jeff's mother, Mary Guibert, has given the project its wings.

It appears that Amy Berg has just replaced Jake Scott on the project. Should be interesting since it is her first feature film after making several highly praised documentaries and one short. I'm slightly more excited about this film now.

The trailer really fails to sell you the movie (bad editing?). I hope the movie turns out to be fine though, as I really like this Penn Badgley fella!

Penn does have the singing down, and I'm sure he'll do a great job. But from pictures I've seen of the late Jeff Buckley James Franco looks like he could have played far as his and Jeff's looks go. Also, is that writing that we see in the film supposed to have similar writing to Jeff Buckley's album "GRACE"?

What's the name of the song sung at the end of the trailer?

Sean Thompson on Sep 18, 2012

'Once I Was' by Tim Buckley.
