Raiders of the Lost Ark

"Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?" He's back! Everyone is back this year, from Indiana Jones to Jaws to James Bond. THR is breaking the news early to report that in honor of the upcoming Blu-Ray release of the original three Indiana Jones movies on Blu-Ray in September, IMAX is going to be showing an exclusive "reformatted" 70mm print of Raiders of the Lost Ark in IMAX theaters everywhere for one week. The 1981 classic that started it all, restored for the Blu-Ray release, inspected/approved by Steven Spielberg and Paramount, returning to IMAX in glorious 70mm this fall. It's going to be a wonderful fall for 70mm movies.

The news just hit and the complete theater listing will come with a press release in the next few days. In the meantime, what we do know is that Raiders of the Lost Ark starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen (and John Rhys-Davies!) is coming to IMAX theaters, both digital LieMAX and 70mm/film, on September 7th and will run for a week until September 13th (via ScreenCrush). In addition, if you're in Austin, as part of their 70mm event, they're showing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in early September at the Alamo Drafthouse. I am a lifelong fan of the classic Indy movies and can't wait to see the restored, cleaned up, high def Blu-Ray release anyway. We'll update with complete info/theater listings from Paramount once it's out.

Alex, Is this the future? Are we going to be getting every popular older movie returning to the theater for a run at more money? I know we've already seen it to some extent (Titanic, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, etc . . . although those were 3D upgrades). I'm not complaining, just curious how prevalent you think this will become.

Not prevalent enough. No Jurassic Park or Jaws re release :(

Actually I just read an article and Spielberg is going to do the first Jurassic Park...but sadly, not Jaws!
        • jacobcrim
          That would be awesome!
      • Jaws is playing as DLP print (in limited release) surrounding Universal's 100th anniversary. This is the same master the Blu Ray is based on. Check your listings!

          Where would I check ?

Hopefully the trend continues, I'd love the chance to see more classics on the big screen (particularly in IMAX).

I for one will try to go see this, one of the best action movies ever. When will Aliens be finally re-released to theaters ?

I actually like this trend. Can't wait to see Jurassic Park in 3D next year. I love these old films and to get another chance to see them on the big screen again is terrific. I wish they'd added the 3D to Indy too but because it's probably a bigger investment than just I-Max and it's a limited run I can see the logic
  • Crossing my fingers it comes to a theater near me! I'm all for classic movies getting re-released into theaters. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to see Alfred Hitchcock movies (Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window) and it was amazing!

Damn that's so soon, and not out long enough. Ugh, I need to get on this.
  • If it's anywhere within a reasonable drive, I'm in. I have NEVER seen Raiders on the big screen (poor, deprived me 😉 ).

Why is this falsely being reported as a 70mm presentation, when the IMAX site clearly states that it's digital only?
