The Sweeney

The news of a big screen adaptation of the British TV series The Sweeney is obviously a bigger deal across the pond than it is in the United States, but we've been keeping an eye on the project (with a developing sequel) because it features of Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (aka rapper Plan B) as Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter respectively, two members of the "Flying Squad," a branch of the Metropolitan Police specializing in armed robbery and violent crime in London. Hayley Atwell and Damian Lewis also star in the film and now we have the first trailer straight out of the UK.

Here's the first trailer for Nick Love's adaptation of The Sweeney, embedded from MSN UK:

Nick Love (The Football Factory) directed The Sweeney and co-wrote the screenplay with John Hodge (Trainspotting, The Beach) based on 1970's British TV series of the same name. Ray Wintsone and Ben Drew (aka rapper Plan B) play Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter respectively, two members of the "Flying Squad," a branch of the police specializing in armed robbery and violent crime in London. The film hits the UK on September 21st, but doesn't yet have a US release date.

In that if untreated with severe medication it will cause blood to piss out your eyes and rot you inside out from your very core. I kind of wish Hammond died in that car crash. I've never watched it but I can't even stand looking at those fuckers.

This looks truly atrocious. No wonder it took so many years to get in to Production.

It was originally going to be shot in 2008 with Danny Boyle's DNA Films production company making it for Fox Searchlight to the tune of £16m, but they decided not to do it because Fox thought it wouldn't sell outside the U.K. and Ireland where the original series is better known and remembered (and for good reason, it's the best Brit series ever, hands down), which is why the new one is an independently financed and produced movie with a much smaller £3.5m budget. It'll do well in the U.K. and Ireland based on nostalgia towards the original series, and it'll make it's money back alright, but that trailer is a little, well, 'meh', I was expecting something that actually looked like a movie rather than an extended television episode, still, I'm not judging it based on a mere trailer, it could yet turn out well...

Correction, the actual budget for the proposed 2009 version was actually $16m not £16m (about £8m or thereabouts), and Ray Winstone originally turned it down because he was too busy, so if the delay meant he was able to play Regan in this version, it was worth it, apparently there's a massive shootout in the middle of the film that takes place across downtown London, and has been compared to the bank robbery shootout in Michael Mann's 'Heat'...

Well, if the Top Gear segment was anything to go by (and that might have been the worst fucking thing the lads have done in three or four years) then this will be some straight to dvd bullshit.
