'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Writers Will Script 'Jurassic Park 4'

Jurassic Park IV

Over a year ago we learned the exciting news that Steven Spielberg was meeting with screenwriter Mark Protosevich (the guy who was working with the director on that dead Oldboy remake with Will Smith) to develop ideas for Jurassic Park 4, a potential franchise reboot. Later in the summer, Spielberg confirmed exploration of a sequel, but said he probably wouldn't direct. Well, now we finally have some real development on the project as Deadline reports Rise of the Planet of the Apes screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have been hired to write the sequel with Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy both producing.

As of now there are no plot details, but this is the most solid news we've gotten on the potential sequel, and we still don't know if it will act as a franchise reboot to open up for more sequels. While it's wholly exciting that life found a way into this long rumored project, a lot is riding on this script, so hopefully this writing duo can deliver. They successfully pulled of a Planet of the Apes sequel, so I'd say they're probably the best people for the job. Universal is likely testing the Jurassic Park interest pool with their re-release of the first film in 3D next summer on July 19th, 2013. Here's hoping it's not any worse than the third installment, and brings back Jeff Goldblum. But what will we do without Stan Winston and his magnificent effects?

I REALLY don't want them to make another one. In my opinion, there should have been no sequels. If your film becomes the highest grossing of all time(The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Jurassic Park, Titanic, Avatar) then there should be NO sequels...the chances of them matching the explosive response of the first film is slim to in the end they will only water down it's impact. I mean, if they want to call it something else...ala Batman Begins and The Dark Knight...and make a point to give the sequel it's own identity...THEN it's different. I believe Cameron said Avatar 2 won't be Avatar 2, that it'll have it's own title. But when people think Star Wars, Jaws or Jurassic's a shame that they may think of a lesser entry in the franchise iand not the landmark original.

Yessssssssss!!!! JP4 WE WANT FOR YOU! Robert Zemeckis for director of JURASSIC PARK 4!
    • Ehsan Davodi
Precisely choise dear Alan but I'm skeptical little bit! I think they take helmet to some freaking video-clip-show maker like Rupert Sanders or Robert Stromberg! Let's hope it not be!
    • Manuel
Ha! That would be acceptable, but, I think, this is more closely to be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld or Will Smith. And maybe you will see the first black T-Rex. The T-Bone-Rex.
  • Meh first is a classic nearly perfect. The effects are perfect even at 20 years old. There ae movies today that do not live up to the effects standard set by the original. Then they made the second one....then the third............

This is great news. It's obvious from listening to interviews that these two are smart and very capable writers. Let's hope the other pieces fall into place. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was fantastic, due to a lot of talented people, the writers being a big part of that.

Not a huge fan of the series, but this sounds interesting.

i had a dream about Jurassic Park 4 like 3 days ago. No joke! But it involved some sort of Mowgli type character, immortality, Spartans and time travel... i also recall having to buy some rednecks a case of beer and a cop setting up a speed trap on the side of the road. probably wouldn't make the best addition to the series.....

I hove this is the best for the franchise, but I'm afraid they are exploiting the "Jurassic Park" brand and not for the good of it.

  • grimjob
If this is something they feel they need to do, at least make it a direct sequel. Keep it in the world we're all familiar with. No need to "reboot/remake" it, just make it better than the 3rd one.

The writing for everybody but Caesar was awful in RotPotA. Not sure if this will be good because there won't be a character like Caesar in this (I hope).
