After a small but pivotal role in The Social Network, actress Rooney Mara went on to get her own franchise by taking the lead in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Meanwhile, Rebecca Hall stars in another big franchise with a supporting role in Iron Man 3 and Emily Blunt has had a couple great ventures into sci-fi with Looper and The Adjustment Bureau. Now the three actresses are competing for the same role as Deadline reports Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan's frequent collaborator and cinematographer Wally Pfister, has narrowed down the female lead to Mara, Hall or Blunt. More below!
One of these actresses will star opposite Johnny Depp in the sci-fi film, and since we just found out some more plot details about the Tron-esque story, here's a recap of the most recent details: A husband and wife team develop a programming code for the first self-aware computer. But when a group of anti-technology terrorists try to assassinate the husband, his wife uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Rather than going horribly wrong, the man starts to respond in computer form and connects him to the Internet to continue to explore this breakthrough. But the terrorists are still in pursuit, trying to destroy the computer.
Mara, Hall or Blunt are up for the role of the wife, and filming is supposed to begin in March. However, Blunt is still figuring out scheduling issues with All You Need is Kill so that might make things more difficult to get the role over Mara or Hall. All three actresses are talented in their own way, but I think I'd Blunt would fit the best with Depp as his wife. Mara just seems a little too young, and we're already seeing Hall take the scientist role in Iron Man 3, so let's mix it up a bit. Either way, we're excited to see what Pfister brings to the table as a director after being such an acclaimed director of photography.
