Sharlto Copley Now Offered the Villain Role in Spike Lee's 'Oldboy'
After running through names like Christian Bale, Clive Owen and Colin Firth, it's time for someone whose first name doesn't start with a "C" to enter the race to play the villain in Spike Lee's remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy. Variety has word that breakout District 9 star and The A-Team member Sharlto Copley has now been offered the role in the revenge thriller which already has Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen set to star. For those unfamiliar, the story follows a man kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years for unknown reasons. Upon his perplexing release, he sets out to find out just who held him hostage and why.
Copley has only starred in one major film since District 9 and that's the summer blockbuster The A-Team. However, he's got Europa and Elysium coming soon. Initially, Copley was supposed to be a part of Men in Black 3 this year, but that deal fell through. To have Copley taking on a film like this in the villainous role of a mysterious billionaire out to destroy Brolin's character's life would do wonders for his versatility as an actor and should help make him quite the high profile star if he should pull it off. Olsen meanwhile merely keeps continuing her quick rise to the top as a caseworker who helps Brolin's character investigate the past. The cast is making this project sound better and better, so count me in for now.
