'Skyfall' Star Ben Whisaw Also Eyed for Spielberg's Robopocalypse'
After tackling the role of James Bond's new quartermaster in Skyfall and a supporting turn in the ambitious Cloud Atlas this fall, it looks like young British actor Ben Whishaw is sticking with blockbuster territory. Variety has word that Whishaw is yet another actor at the top of Steven Spielberg's list to take a role in Robopocalypse. Just yesterday we learned Anne Hathaway was also being eyed along with Chris Hemsworth and that resigned 20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Tom Rothman was boarding the project as a producer. Thankfully, this time there are some ever so brief details about a character in the adaptation.
Whishaw's role would be a hacker named Lurker. He doesn't have an official offer yet, but I doubt the actor is at the top of the list for this role, and I doubt he would turn down a Spielberg film unless he's already committed to another project. That's about the only character details we have since the book by Daniel H. Wilson does not have a main character. That makes for quite a challenge that falls to Cabin in the Woods writer Drew Goddard to overcome. The only thing we know is that these characters will all be facing a robot rebellion against the human race in a future where the global network of machines on which our world has grown dependent suddenly becomes an implacable, deadly foe after a sentient piece of artificial intelligence reprograms them to become self-aware and fight back.
