'Taken 2' Director Olivier Megaton is 'Taking Gotham' in Action Thriller
by Ethan Anderton
December 13, 2012
This year wasn't all that hot for director Olivier Megaton as he was at the helm of the underwhelming sequel Taken 2, that was basically the action thriller equivalent of The Hangover Part II. A recycled story, action that didn't up the ante, and a generally weak script just made the sequel far less fun and pleasing than its surprising predecessor starring Liam Neeson. But now Megaton is on to new horizons with a moderately budgeted action thriller called Taking Gotham. The real-life based story follows a secret unit of the NYPD that was created in response to a string of brutal robberies in New York City. More below!
But after a deadly sting operation, the unit is suddenly disavowed by the NYPD and they have to go deep into the underground world of crime to clear their names. So it's basically Mission: Impossible - Gotham Protocol. Deadline says the $60 million film was written by Thomas Kelly, but a cast is still being rounded up for the film. Production will begin in March so expect some casting news very shortly. We're not sure if this film requires a big ensemble or just a few team members for to make up the unit. Either way, we're hoping Megaton can redeem himself and deliver a great action thriller. Stay tuned for updates.
