That 'Before Sunrise' and 'Before Sunset' Sequel Shoots This Summer

Before Sunset

Last November we learned Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were getting together to write up a long rumored sequel to the hit romances Before Sunrise and Before Sunset from director Richard Linklater. At the time, speaking with the French outlet AlloCine (via Vulture), Hawke said, "All three of us have been having similar feelings that we're ready to revisit those characters. There's nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again so we've really started thinking that would be a good thing to do." Now it sounds like they're shooting the sequel this summer.

Hawke recently sat down with IndieWire and talked about a project with Linklater tentatively called The 12-Year Project, a series of 12 vignettes, one made each year, following the life of a little boy from first grade to twelfth grade. Hawke says, "I play his father; just little moments of childhood and stuff. What the movie’s largely really about is time." But then he dropped the bomb that, "We’re also doing a follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, so that will be fun. We’re going to shoot that this summer.” The question is what will they call this one? After Sunset comes to mind, but if this is going to be the end of a trilogy, something with a bit more finality is needed. Of course, I wouldn't mind if these three got together for another one of these films every nine years. It would be like the 7-Up documentary series, but with these two characters meeting up somewhere every nine years. That would be pretty damn great.

What a great bit of news. Like having a few bottles of the same wine and opening one every nine years. Can't wait.

Only Bad thing is shouldn't they be a couple? We could experience modern relationships and just life. It would be a modern take of what Ingmar Bergman sort of attempted to do with Scenes from a Marriage and Saraband. Anyhow I've been waiting for this for too long. Awesome news. Now when can we get these on Blu-ray? I hope Criterian does a box set.

Can we have a happy ending now? Or at least bitter sweet..

In the first movie they were both caught up in the moment. In the second movie it shows it never left them. They say there is one great love in your life and she was the one for him and he was the one for her. You can tell their hearts ache for each other. I truly hope the third and last sequel will finally bring them together. True love has to find a way sometimes it can't all be bitter sweet.
