They're Showing Classic Bond Films on the Beach in Cannes? Heaven!
Cinéma de la plage, it's called, cinema on the beach. Cannes is located on the southern edge of France on the Mediterranean, and a few years back they opened a screening venue right on the beach next to the Palais. They screen films for free, both classics and new picks, and this year they're doing some extra special for James Bond and its 50th Anniversary. The Guardian reports that, while there won't be anything from Skyfall, they are screening 5 classic Bond films on the beach during the festival. As a huge Bond fan (who just visited the set of Skyfall) this is heaven. Watching some of the best Bond films on a beach? It's heaven!
Skyfall, being directed by Sam Mendes, has nearing complete on production and is entering post-production throughout the summer to makes its November release. So in the meantime, Eon Productions is bringing the classic Bond films Dr. No (aka Docteur No) (1962), From Russia With Love (1963), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) and Casino Royale (2006) to the Cinéma de la plage as part of the festival's screenings. At least two of these are some of my all-time favorites from the entire 22-film Bond Series and I may try to actually catch them (though I'm honestly not much of a fan of Diamonds Are Forever). "The screenings in Cannes mark a year long celebration including a return to theatres worldwide of some of the classic Bond films," said MGM and Sony in a statement. Sounds great.
This year's Cinema de la Plage line-up at Cannes 2012 also includes Jaws, followed by George Lucas' Red Tails, as well as Jackie Chan's Project A (1982) and Philippe de Broca's The Joker aka Le Farceur (1961). You can find the complete listings with screening schedule on the official Cannes 2012 website. This is honestly just awesome to see them showing these kind of films on top of the amazing Cannes Film Festival line-up this year anyway. I'll be attending Cannes again and as I said before, I'm actually going to try and catch a few of these. It truly does sound like cinema heaven. Looking forward to hitting Cinema de la Plage!
