The Comedy

While Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim made a splash with their familiar brand of comedy at Sundance earlier this year with Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie (now on Netflix Instant), the duo also had a more artistic, abstract and even provoking film at the film festival in the form of The Comedy. And while the title indicates simply more laughter, the first trailer for the film itself seems to be more engaging, stylistic and evocative than any of their previous work. Heidecker takes the lead and also spends time with LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and more in a film that promises to be peculiar, dark and resonating.

Here's the full theatrical trailer for Rick Alverson's The Comedy, originally from Apple:

On the cusp of inheriting his father's estate, Swanson (Heidecker) is a man with unlimited options. An aging hipster living in Brooklyn, he spends his days in aimless recreation with like-minded friends in games of comic irreverence and mock sincerity. As Swanson grows restless of the safety a sheltered life offers him, he tests the limits of acceptable behavior, pushing the envelope in every way he can. For more.

The Comedy is directed by filmmaker Rick Alverson, of indies The Builder and New Jerusalem. The script was co-written by Alverson, Robert Donne & Colm O'Leary. This first premiered at this year's Sundance. Tribeca Films is releasing The Comedy in limited theaters on November 9th, plus VOD on October 24th.

Its so strange to see Tim & Eric in a somewhat serious and self reflective role. Its almost like they're exploring their own screwed up sense of humor. I'll probably see it when it's on video.

the last thing i'd call that trailer would be "serious and self-reflective".

The only movie I walked out of at Sundance, along with many many other people. Absolutely terrible, self indulgent, boring crap.

I have no idea what I just watched, and I don't really have any intention of trying to find out... but that was some oddly chosen time to throw in William Basinski as trailer music
  • Ha ha h ah h ahhaa. Looks pretty much some first world problems going on there.

I don't care about fat white guys. This trailer made me care less about them.
  • Saw some of this during South By Southwest. It looks really good, and the trailer makes me want to see it even more. Not really sure what all the fuss is about around here. The majority of garbage movies have good trailers and people get huge boners over it.
