Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. Could Team Up for 'El Presidente'
Here's a piece of trivia for fans of The Avengers: did you know that Tom Cruise was once set to play the role of Tony Stark? While the role eventually went to Robert Downey Jr., the two iron men might actually be teaming up in a movie of their own for Meet the Parents director Jay Roach. Vulture reports that Roach, who has dabbled in political films recently with Game Change and the upcoming The Campaign, is staying in the same realm for El Presidente, a comedy about a gung-ho Secret Service agent (Cruise) tasked with following America's worst former president, a sleazy mess (Downey). Count me in! More below!
Cruise and Downey are two of my favorite actors, so naturally I'm stoked to hear that they could be working together. It's still early in the process so we're not sure if this casting is going to pan out quite yet, but even if it doesn't, I'll still be excited about the movie because it's written by "Parks and Recreation" writer/producer Dan Goor, who had a great career writing for Conan and "The Daily Show" before writing some of the best episodes of one of NBC's funniest comedies. Apparently, the El Presidente script is getting a rewrite, but I hope this thing makes its way toward production sooner rather than later, because it sounds fantastic. Keep in mind that nothing is official yet, so stay tuned as this project develops.Interested?
