This year, both Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace enjoyed roles that made them a little more familiar to audiences in The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus respectively. Now the two will team up in a film that is close to Hardy's heart. Earlier this year we heard Hardy was teaming up with Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio to produce a film about animal trafficking, but this new film called Animal Rescue highlights animal abuse. Shutter Island writer Dennis Lehane will script the film following a Boston bartender who rescues a puppy from the garbage and becomes the target of the dog's abusive and unstable former owner.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg as the bartender also gets caught up in the middle of a criminal cospiracy that unfolds in his bar, which happens to be controlled by the mob. Variety reports Lehane is writing the script from a short story he wrote himself as well. The title likely has a double meaning, and maybe at some point, the dog will save the bartender's life as well. The animal rescue part of the script seems a bit forced in this description, but I trust Lehane as a writer. It's assumed that Hardy will take the lead role, but we're not sure who Rapace will play (maybe a love interest). Bullhead director Michael R. Roskam will be at the helm of the film, and hopefully we'll hear more on the Fox Searchlight project soon.
