UK TV Star Charlotte Riley Joins Tom Cruise In 'All You Need Is Kill'
It's always cool to see an up-and-coming actor or actress get his or her first big shot in a mega-budget Hollywood studio film, and that's exactly what's happening to British actress Charlotte Riley right now. Variety reports that the "World Without End" star, who is engaged to The Dark Knight Rises' Tom Hardy, has locked down a high-profile role alongside Tom Cruise and co-star Emily Blunt in the action film directed by Doug Liman. In the sci-fi twist on Groundhog Day, Cruise plays a soldier who dies on the battlefield but is reincarnated after every death, leading him to become an even better soldier each time. More below!
Riley's role isn't specified, other than to say that she and Blunt "play soldiers who fight alongside Cruise." Liman's film will be an adaptation of a Japanese graphic novel, and there's something interesting here that we haven't really noticed before. Take a look at the synopsis from Amazon:
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?
Obviously the character names will be changed for American audiences, but will the "Bitch of War" character still be a factor? Could Riley, or even Blunt for that matter, end up actually being this character? It's possible, but we'll have to wait on further casting to figure it out. Production is slated to get underway in London this fall, so we'll definitely be keeping our eyes on this one because we're interested to see Cruise's big return to sci-fi with this and Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion. Thoughts?
