Video Blog: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' IMAX Prologue Fires Things Up

"You think you're safe." I can already tell 2013 is going to be an outstanding year for science fiction. Earlier tonight, Paramount invited a number of journalists to a screening in Los Angeles of the 9-minute IMAX 3D prologue for J.J. Abrams' new sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. It was announced a few weeks ago that the prologue, similar to The Dark Knight, will play in front of IMAX (digital only) screenings of The Hobbit on December 14th - this weekend. Unlike The Dark Knight (or TDKR), it's an intense intro and early tease, and leaves an impact but didn't blow me away. Still, this a hell of a tease that really kicks things up a notch.

We were asked not to reveal a scene-by-scene breakdown of what happens in the footage (but that wasn't my plan anyway). But I can say that it starts with a quick glimpse at Benedict Cumberbatch, but nothing more with him. Then jumps into an action scene with Kirk and Bones on another planet (the red one from the first trailer) and ends with a climactic moment involving Spock. That's as much as I'll say. Like all the other IMAX prologues we've seen, this is an experience that must be had in theaters for yourself. I have very high hopes for Star Trek Into Darkness, the full movie, when it's released next May. Everything about the entire experience looks incredible and exhilarating - Star Trek bigger and better than you've ever seen it before. As I said in the video blog above, the most exciting sequences were the bits in the montage of footage (not from the opening 9 minutes) at the very end. Space battles, epic scenes shot in IMAX, with the same focus on character and emotion (and mystery) that J.J. is known for. The way it opens gave me chills at first, but then by the end all I wanted to do was keep watching. I wish it were May 2013 already! Though I can't wait until next Friday so I can go watch this opening Into Darkness sequence over again... and again.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the sequel to the J.J. Abrams-directed reboot of Gene Roddenberry's original science fiction series. The screenplay this time was co-written by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman & Damon Lindelof. Most of the crew is back, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin & John Cho. Paramount is bringing Into Darkness to theaters May 17th next summer.

As I have said on this site and other forums, it being Kahn make no sense based off of the official synopsis. Kahn is not a "one man weapon of mass destruction" Gary Mitchell however IS. Plus unless they just glaze over the finding of the Botany Bay there is nothing personal between Kahn and Kirk at this point. Villain is Mitchell.

  Remember that the first movie totally rebooted the original Star Trek as we know it. The past we know is NO MORE, Kirk's dad dead right after his birth birth, Planet Vulcan destroyed, etc. The entire Starfleet universe has been turned upside down. The timeline is totally different with all new circumstances happening.

    How did Nero's interference with the timeline retroactively change Khan's ethnicity to white British guy since Khan was already aboard the Botany Bay by the time Nero appeared at Kirk's birth?

      Or make it so the Botany Bay has been found. The BB was launched well before Neros meddling altered the time line. Kahn is out there and needs to be found. Not having that be a part of a movie if it had happened would be a waste of some good fan service.

        Also nobody seems to remember that Kahns revenge happens at a much later period in Kirks life.He has an adult son by then for crying out loud.

  And many other reasons. Like : Khan would still be frozen in space at this point. Khan was never in a Starfleet uniform unlike BC in the trailer. It looks like BC can jump really high in the air. We never saw Khan do anything like that. Both Simon Pegg and BC have said they're tired of everyone saying it's Khan and they're sick of denying it. Etc.. People are so desperate for it to be Khan that it's ridiculous. " Ooh - planet on fire...must be a new planet created by the Genesis Device. ITS KHAN" ... Or...Y'know...It's just a Volcano?

    Well now Kahn is a super human, along with his "superior intellect" he is superior in all ways physical I would not doubt he would have mad ups.

The blonde is Dr. Marcus, Kirk's wife, the villain is Khan, who has been unfrozen by his followers, gets put away again by Kirk, which is why he hates him so later on. Just guessing...

I'm glad I don't measure all experiences against whether they live up to The Dark Knight. I guess it helps that I simply liked TDK very much, rather than worshiping at its altar.

I don't understand why people refuse to accept change and have fun with new possibilities ...Abrams can retell everything. Khan...Mitchell ...someone new...combination of both...whatever. First, Khan doesn't have to be exactly like the original. Second, this is an "Alternate " universe. Lighten up and enjoy discussion but it's just a movie. Forget about "Canon". I'll be happy with this movie no matter what. In this universe Khan could be a super genetic starfleet officer that went to far and became a criminal only to be exiled. Now Kirk and crew must stop him. Just thoughts. Thanks JJ and all for putting the mystery and fun into moviegoers. And to the Pharisees ...learn to accept change and new ideas ...have fun and enjoy!

  If he can retell everything why use Kirk and Spock and the rest of the gang at all? Why not kill them off and start with a new set of heroes and villains? Oh,marketing I guess.So yeah as much as this is an alternate universe it is still bound to original canon just because of the potential profits.Yes ,it is a money grab don't be naive.
