Vincent Cassel is Back with Viggo Mortensen for 'Eastern Promises 2'
Back in 2010, we heard that director David Cronenberg would be reteaming with his Eastern Promises star Viggo Mortensen for a sequel to the acclaimed 2007 film. It was supposed to shoot that winter, but the project stalled out and Cronenberg went on to direct Cosmopolis instead. Now, Vulture says that the project is moving forward again, as Vincent Cassel is in negotiations to reprise his role and join Mortensen in Eastern Promises 2, which would pick up right where the first movie left off. The bad news? Cronenberg won't be directing this one. He'll pass the buck to the writer of both movies, Steven Knight. More below!
For those of you who are bummed about Cronenberg leaving the series, Knight may not be such a bad choice for a replacement. He knows that cinematic universe better than anyone, and it could turn out similar to the way Bourne series writer Tony Gilroy is taking over that franchise with The Bourne Legacy, which looks awesome. Knight is directing the upcoming Jason Statham action film Hummingbird, so he'll be able to get some solid experience behind the camera before he starts rolling on Eastern Promises 2. I wasn't a huge fan of the original movie, but I know it has many supporters, so hopefully people will be excited to hear that this project is finally making some forward progress again. Cool?
UPDATE: Focus Features has written to let us know that David Cronenberg actually is returning to direct the sequel with Steven Knight still writing the script. So if you were worried about Cronenberg not returning, rest easy tonight.
