Pacific Rim Trailer

"A movie where my head would explode if I was 12..." One of the many stellar sci-fi trailers finally unveiled this past week was for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, a futuristic giant robots vs giant monsters action extravaganza. But what exactly is it about and what exactly did we see in the trailer? Well, thankfully MTV caught up with director Guillermo del Toro after the debut for this commentary-filled breakdown of the first trailer. They cover a lot, including how much we'll see of various pieces, what a lot of the early scenes in the trailer are showing us, and much more. It's actually an excellent intro to this original sci-fi blockbuster.

Watch the breakdown of the Pacific Rim trailer, featuring Guillermo del Toro commentary, from MTV:

Note: It keeps saying "sorry, this video is no longer available" but we're not sure why. Watch it on MTV.

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) is directing Pacific Rim from a script by Travis Beacham. The film follows a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi), who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger, a massive robot designed to fight legions of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju, which started rising from the sea years ago. They stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. The film also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Clifton Collins Jr. Warner Bros will release Pac Rim in theaters in 3D on July 12th, 2013. View the trailer.

So now not just trailers give away too much... a director will now sit down and not only analyze his own trailer, but describe what and where everything in the trailer is in the film? Just show one solid trailer, then keep mum and say nothing. let the speculation and fandom begin instead of giving away details that should be part of the viewer's discovery when they watch the film in theaters. I love Guillermo. I just wish he hadn't spoken a word.

Well said - if they have to do this they can't have much faith in the trailer doing its job.

I would recommend highly that people skip this, I made it about a minute in before I realized that I'd made a huge mistake. This is like the complete opposite of JJ Abrams film making strategy and Del Toro leaves absolutely nothing to mystery.

This is the most exciting blockbuster to come around since Avatar

I amazed myself by reading the clear explanation that the content of the video would be obviously spoilerish and then didn't watch it. Subsequently, I don't feel the need to rant about what they do and do not release in relation to the promotion of the film. I sense those two things are somehow connected.

U guys are such spoiled lames...He did it to provide some additional insight on the storyline which could get viewers involved at a more personal level. U become more invested...And obviously hes so proud of it he just cant stop talking about it, he wants everyone to know the story,...Anyway u cant sit there and say u didn't appreciate the commentary...Quit complaining.

This is a story about Robots vs Kaiju... not Inception. There wasn't much to spoil. Pretty much anything Del Toro said can be pulled out of your impression of the trailer.
