Learn the History of Titular 'Winter Soldier' in Captain America Sequel

As everyone now knows, the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger has been revealed as Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We explained briefly when Anthony Mackie was cast as Cap's sidekick Falcon that (in the comics) Steve Rogers' presumably deceased childhood friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is found alive and brought back to life by the Russian military. With no memory of what happened, or his life before, the Soviets turned him into an assassin called the Winter Soldier, and sent him around killing high profile targets in the Cold War. Now an IGN video dives a little deeper into the history of the character.

The character Winter Soldier, the superhero altar ego for Cap's friend Bucky Barnes, was first introduced in the Captain America #1 series in 2005. Programmed to be a Soviet assassin for Department X, under the code name the Winter Soldier, he is sent on covert wetworks missions, becoming increasingly ruthless and efficient as he kills in the name of the state. What changes from the comics in this case is the change from a time in the past during the Cold War to modern times. How will Steve Rogers find Bucky coping with contemporary society? Exactly what kind of problems will he bring to the table as The Winter Soldier? Will he be the only villain in the film or is there a higher power governing his every move? How will this all tie back into Phase Two of Marvel's cinematic universe and affect The Avengers 2 in 2015? These questions and more will hopefully be answered soon.

I sincerely hope they don't go the route in Capt 2 where Capt dies and Bucky buts on his suit and replaces Evans. However, it wouldn't strike me as odd if in any of the films, one of the main characters die (or gets seriously, almost fatally injured) and brought back to life (typical every movie...which hasn't really been done yet by this avengers franchise). Only time will tell. But I do wonder who the main villain will be in Capt 2, as Bucky can not be it if Capt and Falcon are fighting together.

  My guess is that if they were ever to go the route of Cap dying, it'd be along with the Civil War storyline. So, while that's all a possibility at some point, it'd probably be at least two (if not more) full Avengers movies out.

  Of course Bucky can be the villain (puppeteered by someone else, probably) and Cap and Falcon try and track him down.

  What a stupid thought! They would never dream of doing that. To even think it came across your mind is ridiculous.

    Be careful about saying something is ridiculous and they would never do it. Hollywood is known to pull strange stunts. That said I think it more likely that they will pull something like Falcon dies, Bucky gets his memories back and he becomes Cap America's partner more or less just like he was in the first movie. Only now he's a tad harder to kill. Not fully Super Soldiered but we'll find out that the reason he was in that room at the Factory was that he was a lab rat for Red Skull's attempts at making the serum (which is also a factor in his survival and how he'll be the same age 70 years later just like Steve). He won't get sick, heal from wounds faster etc. Or maybe he will be (if the Russians figure out the rest of the process)
