Watch Wes Anderson's Fun 'Moonrise Kingdom' Animated Storybooks
"Do you like to read?" It might be better if you've already gotten a chance to see Wes Anderson's newest film Moonrise Kingdom in order to check out this new video, but it's not absolutely necessary. In the film the young lead female Suzy (Kara Hayward), packs a bunch of books that she stole from the library when she decides to run away with her pen-pal boyfriend Sam (Jared Gilman). None of the stories are real books, but Anderson has decided to realize them in the form of some short animated sequences which have made their way online, complete with an introduction by Bob Balaban, who narrates the full feature film.
Here's the set of six animated stories from Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, originally from EW.com:
Initially these sequences were intended to be in the film, but Anderson decided to just release them online as supplemental material to check out after viewing the film (full info from EW.com). They're still cool to check out even if the limited release of Moonrise Kingdom hasn't hit your local theater yet, and it doesn't spoil anything from the film, thankfully. The project started with book jacket covers, then animators were tasked with bringing that artistic style to life. It was made in a very short amount of time with animators and artists from around the world taking part. Producer Jeremy Dawson explains their involvement:
"We got the artist to do key drawings, and then someone else had to take those key drawings and animate them. One of these guys I believe was in Sweden, one in Paris, and one in L.A. They were all over the world and we did it all by Internet. For instance, the one with the hydrogoblin, 'The Girl From Jupiter' -- that artist does his work in oil painting, so someone had to kind of emulate that oil painting look in the animation. I think we all just pitched in and we pulled a lot of favors because it was not like we spent a ton of money doing it. People got excited about it because it was a creative thing rather than if they were making a Snickers ad or something. They're about imagination -- it's just more like a spark of this story."
Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, his seventh feature film, was filmed on an island in New England. It recounts a tormented and surprising story of children and adults during the stormy days of the summer of 1965 (watch the trailer here). The cast includes: Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand and Jason Schwartzman as well as Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman playing the two young lovers. Focus Features already opened the film in limited US theaters on May 25th, after first premiereing at the Cannes Film Festival. Stay tuned for more updates! Visit the film's official website here.
