What?! John Travolta Rumored to Star in 'The Toxic Avenger' Movie?
If you thought playing a woman in the big screen adaptation of the musical Hairspray was the strangest role John Travolta would take, think again. After being away from the big screen for a couple of years, Travolta made a return to the movies in Oliver Stone's Savages, but if the rumors are true, his next role will be unlike anything he's ever done before. It's on the Grid (via Twitch) is saying Travolta is attached to The Toxic Avenger, the remake of the 1984 Troma comedy cult classic about a mop-wielding radioactive superhero who wreaks havoc on polluters in Jersey. This sounds like it might be just crazy enough to work. Read on!
The project has been gestating since 2010 when Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink got attached to the project, and it sounds like he's still involved. Before anyone gets excited though, it's not clear if Travolta is being lined up to play Toxie himself. He could end up just playing the villain of some corporation polluting the Earth and forcing Toxie to get back into action. As long as it's better than his turn as a villain in The Punisher that'd be fine, but I'd rather see him suited up as the mop-wielding simpleton named Melvin, whose trusting ways made him easy prey for thugs who tossed him into a vat of toxic waste, thus turning him into The Toxic Avenger. It'd be pretty fun to have Danny Zuko decked out in gross make-up with ladies still fawning over him. Make Nicolas Cage the villain in that scenario and we've got a classic.
UPDATE: Variety has word that Travolta is indeed in line to have a role in the film, but not as the titular hero. The actor would have an unknown supporting role. However, reporter Jeff Sneider says the film is still a long ways off as Steve Pink has Bad Santa 2 and the remake of About Last Night in his immediate future.
