Whoa! 'Before Midnight' Has Already Finished Filming in Greece?
Looks like Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke have pulled a fast one on cinephiles. The creative team behind Before Sunrise and Before Sunset have been talking to the press about a proposed sequel (which we now know is called Before Midnight), but just last week, Hawke said that the trio was only in the writing phase while they were hanging out in Greece, testing the waters to see if they could come up with a worthy sequel to the terrific series. Looks like they've actually been filming all along, as The Playlist reports that principal photography on the sequel was actually completed last night. More below!
The team released a statement about their work on the project: "It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight." Since they've said countless times that they wouldn't make another sequel unless it was narratively satisfying, it looks like they finally found a good enough reason to return to star-crossed lovers Jesse and Celine after the wonderfully ambiguous ending of 2004's Before Sunset, for which the group earned a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination. Distribution rights will be shopped at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, so expect news about when we'll finally be able to see the finale of this trilogy sometime soon. Excited to see what happens to Celine and Jesse?
