Anna Kendrick to Play Cinderella in Rob Marshall's 'Into the Woods'
She's all over the place! Another new project for talented young actress Anna Kendrick, who has already appeared in numerous headlines this week alone. She stars in Drinking Buddies and Rapturepalooza this summer, but has also just booked a major role as Cinderella in the Disney musical Into the Woods. The Broadway-to-movie adaptation is being directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) who is developing the project for Disney and has been lining up the ensemble cast over the last few months. The cast already has big names like Johnny Depp, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Pine, Meryl Streep; Kendrick will be a worthy addition.
For those unfamiliar, Into the Woods was originally a Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine that mashes-up classic fairy tales and revolves around a baker and his wife, to be played by James Corden and Emily Blunt. They attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront The Witch, played by Meryl Streep, who put the spell on them. Along their journey they meet classic characters including Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and Little Red Riding Hood. In this version, Cinderella is married to a vain prince, being played by Chris Pine, and is described as "a woman trying to find her place in the world."
Anna Kendrick already made her mark in the musical genre starring in Pitch Perfect last year, which is already getting a sequel. She is also currently filming another musical, titled The Last 5 Years adapted from yet another Broadway musical as well. Kendrick also appeared in the Twilight series and received an Oscar nomination in 2010 for her supporting role in Jason Reitman's Up in the Air. It has been quite fascinating watching her career blossom over the last few years, and I'm sure this Disney role will only take her farther.
