Big casting news to keep the hype going for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline is reporting that Oscar winning actor Benicio Del Toro has signed the deal to put him in "multiple movies" starting with Guardians of the Galaxy. Whoaaa now who is this? No other specific details on his character have been revealed, but some are speculating Del Toro might even be playing the big bad villain Thanos. Is it possible? We'll have to wait and see. Del Toro is the latest to join the eccentric and rather crazy cast that James Gunn is putting together for Guardians, which recently lined up Karen Gillan for a villain + Glenn Close as a cop.
Here's the exact text from Deadline about Del Toro's role: "They are keeping his role under wraps, but he’s playing a character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies." Benicio Del Toro was once rumored to be in the running for Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, before it eventually went to Benedict Cumberbatch. He's currently filming P.T. Anderson's Inherent Vice and Andrea Di Stefano's Pablo Escobar film Paradise Lost, with roles in one of Terrence Malick's films and Arnaud Desplechin's Jimmy P. He's another intriguing addition to this cast.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, being directed by James Gunn, has a cast that currently includes Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Michael Rooker as Yondu, plus Lee Pace, Glenn Close and likely John C. Reilly. There are still a few more roles left to fill before shooting starts this summer. After getting some recent glimpses at more concept art and the Phase Two preview video, Guardians of the Galaxy is looking quite epic, but it will also be Marvel Studio's biggest risk to date. The Marvel Studios movie will arrive in theaters on August 1, 2014. Stay tuned for more updates.
