Can Universal convert me into a fan of their summer blockbusters this year? At the industry convention CinemaCon this year, Universal Pictures brought five of their summer movies (eschewing mention of some of their later titles like 47 Ronin, which they showed us footage for last year) to preview. The studio teased roughly 10 minutes of their movies R.I.P.D. with Ryan Reynolds & Jeff Bridges, Despicable Me 2 from Illumination, and a 15 minute action sequence (the one with the tank seen above) from Fast & Furious 6, which kicked some serious ass. After five sequels, they may finally be turning me into a Fast & Furious fan.
Following the Universal presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Peter Sciretta from SlashFilm and I met for a quick video blog, discussing our thoughts on R.I.P.D., Despicable Me 2 + the Fast & Furious 6 footage.
Out of everything we saw today, I'm probably most interested in R.I.P.D., which is adapted from a comic book starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as holy cops brought back from the dead to work in the "Rest in Peace Department". The footage looked a lot like early Men in Black with goofy creatures and big ass weapons, but it looks like a lot of fun. In addition, the tank/action sequence they showed us from Fast & Furious 6 was, in a word (that I use often), awesome. The tank destruction was brutal and relentless and the coordination of cars and maneuvers were exhilarating to see. I am looking forward to seeing how both of these movies turn out in full this summer, as well as 47 Ronin, Riddick and plenty from Universal in 2013.
