After rumors swirled around actresses like Emma Watson for the lead role in Universal Pictures and Focus Features' anticipated adaptation of the erotic bestselling romance Fifty Shades of Grey, Deadline reports The Social Network, 21 Jump Street and The Five-Year Engagement supporting actress Dakota Johnson has landed the lead female role as Anastasia Steele, an impending college graduate who strikes up an S&M romance with successful young entrepreneur Christian Grey, the physical and emotional dominant to her submissive personality. The move seems surprising upon first inspection, but it really isn't. More below!
The Social Network producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca are behind the adaptation, so they already had an established relationship with the actress. In addition, 21 Jump Street is a Sony film, and Johnson had a small role in that as well. She's proven to be very talented in these small roles, and this should be quite the breakthrough performance as a lead actress. We're not sure how fans of the book series will react since most fans were casting big names in the lead role, but the real dealbreaker for them will be who ends up getting cast as Christian Grey. Rumors lately have pinpointed "Sons of Anarchy" and Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam to take the role, but an announcement hasn't been made yet. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Author E.L. James just updated Twitter to confirm that Charlie Hunnam has taken the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey. Hunnam has been on the rise since his work on "Sons of Anarchy" really got him noticed, and he led the blockbuster Pacific Rim pretty well, but we'll have to see how the fans react, since they will make or break the success of this flick.
