Dane Cook Voicing Dusty in Disney's Animated 'Cars' Spin-Off 'Planes'
by Ethan Anderton
February 28, 2013
Finally! Yesterday, a new trailer for Disney's animated Cars spin-off Planes arrived, and it looked like a weak imitation of Pixar. Now the straight-to-DVD foundation of this film has been solidified as the House of Mouse has just sent over a press release saying that comedian and part-time actor Dane Cook (Dan in Real Life, Mr. Brooks) is providing the voice for Dusty, a small town crop dusting plane who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race despite his fear of heights. Originally Jon Cryer was supposed to take the role, but fell away from the project, and we weren't sure whose voice was in the trailer. More below!
Director Klay Hall ("King of the Hill" and "The Simpsons") tries to hype Cook by saying, "Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character. He gives Dusty a great edge.” Normally, I'd give Pixar benefit of the doubt for their voice casting, which is always perfect, but this is Disney trying to capitalize on Pixar's property, so it's not exactly up to par. It'd be nice to have this turn out to be an endearing family film, but the trailer just makes it look like a lame imitation of what Pixar stands for in the animation world (most of the time). Thoughts?
