Just last week we learned that Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell was reuniting with Jennifer Lawrence in his yet-to-be-titled Abscam drama formerly known as American Bullshit (which also features Oscar nominee and co-star Bradley Cooper). But they won't be done working together after that either. THR has word that Russell has now committed to direct The Ends of the Earth for The Weinstein Company, a project which had Lawrence attached late last summer. This truly is a teaming of Academy Award nominated talent all around as the script comes from Argo writer Chris Terrio. Read on!
Of working with Lawrence yet again, Russell says:
“Jennifer possesses a self-deprecating humor that made all of the cast and crew feel at ease. She is that kind of person. She is the most dedicated person I know. She is devoted to her family and they have been the true inspiration for her character and integrity. Her acting is effortless and she always makes it look easy.”
The story follows a 54-year-old oil tycoon named Ernest Marland, who ended up marrying his adopted daughter Lydie (Lawrence) after getting the adoption annulled. But don't squirm too much just yet - there's no weird incest stuff going on here, as Lydie helped her husband incorporate social issues of the day into his work and became quite the socialite in the process. The main conflict of the film comes when Ernest's business comes crashing down in another timely metaphor for our current economic troubles.
This might be Russell's movie to follow the other project with Lawrence starring alongside Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Amy Adams. The big question is who will end up playing the oil tycoon. That could be a great role for someone like Philip Seymour Hoffman, or maybe even Robert De Niro if Russell decides to use another face from Silver Linings Playbook. Either way, we're probably still a few years off from seeing this one come together since Lawrence has Russell's next film, not to mention the two-part finale of The Hunger Games on the way. Stay tuned for more updates.
