Derek Cianfrance to Direct 'A Cotton Candy Autopsy' Comic Adaptation
Following the announcement of two new projects last month, including The Light Between Oceans and the ESPN movie Those Guys Have All the Fun, director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) has yet another project in the works. While speaking with Jeff Goldsmith on his The Q&A podcast, the director revealed that he's reuniting with Darius Marder, the co-writer of his most recent film with Ryan Gosling, to adapt a story from a DC Comics series from the 90s, A Cotton Candy Autopsy. And if you think that title is crazy by itself, just wait until you hear the premise of the comic book.
Cianfrance also revealed (via The Film Stage) that Ben Mendolsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, Killing Them Softly) will star in the film that he describes as "a crazy movie." And we're not surprised at that since the story from the comic series, Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children, follows a group of drunken clowns named Bingo, Foo Foo, Joey Punchinello and Addy the Freaklady who head out on a road trip adventure after one of them burns down their circus. They steal cars and kidnap women, and there's a sequel volume that came later in the series called A Cotton Candy Autopsy II - Bingo And Addy's Escape. We're not sure just how the film adaptation will shake out, but it sounds really strange. Thoughts?
